WHAT’S THE GO FOR THE LONG WEEKEND (QUEENS BIRTHDAY WEEKEND)

As we get closer & closer to the long weekend, the questions start flooding in – “How’s it looking for the long weekend ‘’

We’ve just put some extra details together to provide you that added bit of confidence & clarity around the long weekend. Currently Sunday is looking fairly cold & wet for most of the region, with snow lined up for the high country

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy early on, with increasing sunny spells through the day. Mostly fine & settled conditions. Overnight we expect a colder southerly to move through, with showers & a light dusting of snow for the ranges ( above 700m ). Highs: 9-11 Lows: 1-3

CWU PLACE TO BE- Mackenzie country & most inland areas, will avoid early morning low cloud. As a general rules, areas south of Amberley should see more sun, during the middle stages of the day.


SUNDAY: A colder day across Canterbury. Fresh to strong southerlies early on, especially for coastal areas. Showers & periods of rain early on, easing into the afternoon.  Light snow above 700m until late afternoon, or early evening. Remaining cold across the region. Frosts developing overnight, severe for inland areas & basins above 400m. Our CWU Road Snowfall Warning is currently in place for Sunday, more details in the ‘Warnings’ area. Highs: 7-9 Lows: 0-2

CWU PLACE TO BE- South Canterbury inland after early snow and showers clear. Overall our coldest & wettest day across the region. A day to wrap up warm.


MONDAY: Showers clinging to coastal parts of Canterbury, Banks Peninsula north to Kaikoura. Early snow showers about the Seaward Kaikoura range, above 800m. Mainly fine and cold inland, with severe morning frosts about inland areas. Mainly sunny & calm for inland areas. Frosts developing at night. Highs 9-11 Lows:-3, 0

CWU PLACE TO BE- Inland areas Banks Peninsula south, just watch out for those frosty conditions early on.  Most of  South & Mid Canterbury will be in the clear.
