AN ACTIVE PERIOD COMING UP – FRESH SNOW FOR ALL OUR SKI FIELDS.

Issued 6:00am Wednesday morning 10/7/2019. Please keep up to date with our ‘Live Weather Feed’ and town pages for all the latest information.

Wednesday.

Heavy rain will set in about the Main Divide & Canterbury Headwaters falling as snow above 1400m-1500m by 10am. Scattered spill over snow flurries and rain out east are possible from midday, possibly reaching our more eastern fields Porters & Mt Hutt. There is the potential for some more sustained and heavy snow for the Ohau fields & Temple Basin today – the only question and doubt? Freezing levels – currently we’re in business!

Strong to gale force nor-west winds may affect ski field operations today; higher chance from midday. Check in with your local ski field website for mountain conditions.

In terms of accumulations; Lake Ohau and Temple Basin may record 30cm +, possibly more for Temple Basin. Check in to their website and current conditions later today.

Outlook – Thursday through to Saturday.

Very active in the Tasman with a number of systems and fronts with snow potential for our western fields – Temple Basin and Ohau. Nor-west winds, gale at various stages for the remainder of our eastern fields = high freezing levels 1800m +. Spill over snow/sleety showers out east are possible. Wind may affect ski field operations on Friday and Saturday – a little calmer and a slight ‘lull’ on Thursday in between systems.

Sunday

Sunday is now looking promising for eastern fields with widespread snow and possibly heavy falls for a time before easing back around evening. We’re currently looking at around 15-25cm at around 1400-1600m with lesser falls to 800-900m. A great top up in time for the second week of school holiday. (Please note snowfall accumulations may change over the next 64 hours.)

Extended Outlook

The overall bigger picture becomes even more complex during middle stages of the month; especially from the 16th with some very cold air and snow to low levels possible. Additionally the Tasman will remain very active pushing in front after front with rain and heavy snow for western fields. Treble Cone in Wanaka will be nailing it soon! Hang in there down south, snow is coming.
