💧❄ SYSTEM SLOWING DEVELOPING (HEAVY & LOW SNOW SET FOR TONIGHT & EARLY TUESDAY MORNING).

It’s been an incredibly busy morning, with warnings in place and media interest. Our wintry period of weather remains on track, we have seen a slight decrease in moisture = snow/rain, but overall this period of weather has showed incredible consistency.

Conditions are gradually starting to deteriorate as this system slowly kicks into gear this afternoon.

➡ Remember we dont expect the heavier rain and snow to set in until tonight.

⚠ Snow will fall for many higher areas & villages tonight and our alpine road snowfall warning remains in place, in addition a heavy snow warning for areas above 400m between Methven & Kaikoura. Keep up to date with the NZ Transport Agency - South Island tonight for restrictions & possible closures.

Remember this system will play out different across the region; some areas will receive heavy rain, some snow and some lucky areas just a period of rain and wintry showers. Source your town forecast for specific details.

Cloudy now in ch-ch. Hve a spit about 2hrs ago but hve had fun until 5min ago. Changes real quick was going to be snow on the port hills but that's fizzed. No real rain in ch-ch until about 4pm. Barometer just about on stormy.

❄ CONDITIONS SET TO DETERIORATE THROUGH THE DAY (HEAVY RAIN & LOWERING SNOW LEVELS FROM EVENING).

Good morning Canterbury. Our wintry period of weather is right on track. We’ve had the wee ‘entrée’ late last night, with cooler southwesterlies, a few showers & a temperature drop but it’s not until later stages of today do we expect the heavier rain and snow to set; for some northern areas it won’t be until overnight until we see the heavier falls.

This is a slow mover and complex and will provide a number of curve balls over the next 24 hours.

❄ For many higher areas about the Canterbury High Country & Foothills, snow looks set to lower to around 200m tonight, with heavy falls likely above 400m. For towns and areas across the Canterbury Plains we can expect period of heavy rain, with areas of surface flooding overnight in low lying areas.

⚠ Snow will likely cause road restrictions and closures from late evening and we currently have a road snowfall warning in place with full details. In addition, our heavy snow warning remains in place for areas between Methven and Kaikoura – a warning which has remained in place for over 64 hours = consistency with models & data.

➡ Keep up to date tonight with the South Island Road NZ Transport Agency - South Island for more details on possible closures and restrictions. If possible avoid all our higher roads from evening and transfer travel dates to late Tuesday or Wednesday.

Good afternoon. Our impressive snow system is showing no signs of weakening, in fact moisture totals have ramped up again this morning (a consistent trend over the last 24 hours).

Snow will be widespread across the Canterbury region above 300m Monday night, but it’s areas above 400m where we can expect heavier falls. Snow may even lower to 200m overnight Monday and early stages of Tuesday morning. We may see sleety falls in Christchurch and snow is likely about the tops of the Port Hills.

Inland areas above 400m in Mid & North Canterbury should now be preparing for heavy snow.

⚠ We currently have a heavy snow warning in place and a road snowfall warning for all our alpine passes. A number of towns and villages will see snow and for many areas above 500m, impressive snowfalls are likely.
